Manurewa AFC President and Life Member Wayne Jensen has been made an honorary member of Northern Region Football.
Wayne’s connection with the Manurewa Club and football in the Auckland region stretches back almost half a century.
He joined the club in 1976 and spent the next 19 years as a player, competing at a high level and contributing to National League and Chatham Cup campaigns. Among the highlights of his playing career was being part of the club’s Franklin Division 1 Championship-winning side in 1982, the same year he received the Semple Trophy Player of the Year award.
When his playing days came to an end, Wayne’s commitment to the club was far from over. He moved into coaching, team management, refereeing, and administration, helping shape the experiences of hundreds of young players. He spent nine years coaching junior teams, managed senior sides, and chaired the Junior Committee during a period when it supported around 450 players.
Over the past two decades, Wayne has continued to play a key leadership role behind the scenes. He has served on the club’s board, held the position of Vice Chairman since 2008, and now serves as President.
“Wayne continues to support the club through operational roles, sponsorship, fundraising, mentoring, and mediation, always demonstrating integrity, accessibility, and deep commitment to Manurewa AFC,” says Club Captain and Chair Bradley Steven.
Wiri Licensing Trust General Manager Kim Green says Wayne is truly deserving of this honour.
“People like Wayne are the backbone of community sport. Nearly five decades of service is an extraordinary commitment, and the impact he has had on generations of players, families, and volunteers at Manurewa AFC cannot be overstated. This recognition reflects not only his dedication to football, but also his contribution to the wider South Auckland community.”
Kim says volunteers play a vital role in the success of local sports clubs and community organisations.
“Behind every thriving club, community group, and event are volunteers who generously give their time, skills, and energy to help others. Their contribution often happens quietly behind the scenes, but our communities simply wouldn’t function without them.
