It’s not just the animals that will be getting excellent medical care at the SPCA’s new centre under construction in Wiri.
The team at SPCA has received funding for an AED defibrillator, which will be installed in the new community and events space, ensuring lifesaving equipment is close at hand should a visitor suffer a cardiac arrest.
SPCA Northern Grant Writer Kerrie Spicer says the event space will accommodate up to 120 people and provide a flexible venue for volunteer training, animal care and wellbeing workshops, corporate volunteer days, staff training and community outreach programmes. The space will also be available for hire by community groups and external organisations, creating a valuable community asset.
“The facility has been created to foster collaboration across the wider animal welfare and veterinary sectors, providing a venue for training, workshops, conferences and stakeholder engagement.”
The current SPCA centre in Māngere has one AED, which will be relocated elsewhere in the new building.
“It’s a big centre, so we’ll definitely need two,” Kerrie says.
A grant from Trillian Trust, supported by Wiri Licensing Trust, covered the cost of the AED and staff training.
“The new AED will be a lifeline should anyone ever need it.”
Wiri Licensing Trust General Manager Kim Grant says there is a real need for more community spaces in South Auckland, and the events room at the new SPCA facility will help fill that gap.
“The new community space will bring people together for learning, volunteering and events, so it’s important that it’s equipped to respond in an emergency,” Kim says.
“We’re proud to support projects that not only strengthen our community but also help make it safer.”
The new purpose-built SPCA centre is expected to open in the first half of 2027, providing modern facilities for animal care alongside a dedicated community space for education, training and events.
